Occurrence of Perchlorate in Drinking, Surface, Ground and Effluent Water from Various Parts of South India

چکیده
In spite of widespread usage of perchlorate (ClO4 ) for different applications in India, the ClO4 being an environmental pollutant a complete survey study has not been reported yet. Present study investigates the occurrences of ClO4 in the drinking water, ground water, surface water and effluent water from various parts of south India. Water samples were collected from Ambattur, Bangalore, Chennai, Coimbatore, Ranipet, Tirupattur, Tirupati and Vellore and analyzed for ClO4 concentration using ion selective electrode method. Water samples further characterized by pH, salinity, oxidation-reduction potential, conductivity and total dissolved solids. The overall ClO4 concentrations ranges from 0 to 93.5x10 μg l and the highest concentration was detected in real effluent samples from Vellore. Out of 130 samples analyzed, 46.92% water samples contain perchlorate level above 0.10x10 μg l and 24 samples showed ClO4 quantity above 0.70x10 μg l. Mean concentrations of ClO4 in drinking water, ground water, surface water and effluent water found to be 126.08, 830.61, 1110.0 and 15754.4 μg l respectively. The permitted level of ClO4 concentration in drinking water by US environmental protection agency is 4 μg l and irrespective of different sampling points chosen, reconnaissance data reveals that there is no remarkable difference in perchlorate contamination in drinking water samples.

Background and Objectives: Perchlorate, as an emerging contaminant, has attracted notice of the most individuals and organizations. Presence of perchlorate in the human body can lead to inappropriate regulation of metabolism in adults. Moreover, due to inhibition of iodide uptake in the thyroid gland, it causes neurological and behavioral problems in infants and children. United States Environm...

BACKGROUND Perchlorate is an emerging water contaminant that disrupts normal functioning of human thyroid gland and poses serious threat to health, especially for pregnant women, fetus and children. RESULTS High level of perchlorate contamination in fresh water sources at places nearby ammonium perchlorate (rocket fuel) handled in bulk is reported in this study. Of 160 ground water samples an...
متن کاملPerchlorate Chemistry: Implications for Analysis and Remediation
Since the discovery of perchlorate in the ground and surface waters of several western states, there has been increasing interest in the health effects resulting from chronic exposure to low (parts per billion [ppb]) levels. With this concern has come a need to investigate technologies that might be used to remediate contaminated sites or to treat contaminated water to make it safe for drinking...
متن کاملUranium in drinking water from the south coast districts of Kerala, India
Background: The South-west coast of India is known to have very high levels of natural background radiation due to the monazite beach sand. Uranium is the heaviest trace element found in all terrestrial substances at varying levels with chemical and radio toxicities. It supports several short-lived radioisotopes in its decay series including radium. Uranium in drinking water is importa...

Hard rock aquifers for the purpose of this Paper mean the non-carbonate, fractured rock aquifers in the terrain covered by crystalline basement complex, metamorphic rocks and also by extensive effusive volcanic rocks like the basalts of western India (Deccan traps. Ground water development in hard rock aquifer areas has always played a secondary role compared to that in the areas having high-yi...
